Although its been cold, weve still had a fantastic time on the mountain thanks to the brilliant snow conditions on the slopes. Certainly, on days like today its a good idea to follow the sunshine and stick to the pistes which have been softened up by the sun throughout the day. We stopped for a cold drink on the terrace of the Olympiades hotel in Pas de la Casa to enjoy the views - sunglasses were necessary! Its a nice, gently undulating run which then has a nice steep drop at the end. The slope runs back down to Pas de la Casa centre and I loved just going up and down it a few times whilst the slopes were quiet to practice my technique and to warm up my legs for a day of skiing! Portella is one of Grandvaliras hidden gems, so make sure you take the time to discover it. Its always such a privilege to be the first person to ride a run, although it sometimes seems a shame to ruin such beautiful work with the lines carved into the snow by our snowboards as we weaved our way down to the bottom of the Llac de Cubil chairlift. The day started off cold so we were grateful for the additional layers we put on this morning, but after a few runs our blood was pumping and we were riding on a high despite the temperature. The coverage is great thanks to almost 200cm of fresh snow in a week! A Lovely day in Pas de la Casa today, the snow clouds have parted and left blue skies and fresh snow on the slopes. making it a good excuse for a quick stop in Pas. Thanks to the fresh snow, you could enjoy the Montmalus freeride area in Grau Roig this morning - which is one of the best freeride areas in Grandvalira in our opinion. The slopes are busier for the Chirstmas holidays but there is still a massive 140km of linked pistes to enjoy across Grandvalira, making it one of the best areas to ski this Chistmas.The best runs at the moment are the ones that are tree lined and less exposed to the sunshine. If youre in resort, be sure to dress for the cold and make the most of the sunshine whilst it lasts; come Thursday well be skiing on a heap of fresh powder. This morning we were blessed with blue skies and sunshine, and thanks to the heavy snowfall last week the snow conditions on the mountain are absolutely brilliant. One of the reasons why I love this run so much is because even on days like today where the weather conditions are variable elsewhere, Cami de Pessons is well-sheltered from the elements, and despite being a red run, its relatively easy-going (but just a little narrow in places). My favourite run of the day was the blue Tubs run which veers off from the red Directa run coming from Coll Blanc towards the resort. For Boxing Day, many of the bars in the village are putting on live music with a mixture of Christmas songs thrown in! Our favourite run this week was black run Granota in Grau Roig where you go through the trees. By around 3pm the slopes were starting to feel a little slushy but were still enjoyable to ride. My favourite run of the day was the red Directa run in Pas de la Casa. Ive mentioned before about dropping down into Grau Roig when the visibility isnt too good, but you could also stick to the lower slopes in Pas de la Casa such as Directa I, Directa II, Tubs etc, which are accessible via the chairlifts at the bottom of the slopes. It was amazing to have the slopes to myself several times this week its all about knowing where to go and at what time! I stopped for lunch at 3 Estanys in Grau Roig, right next to the chair lift in Cubil. Visibility across Pas and Grau is mixed, the clouds are sitting fairly low, so in the clouds it's a little difficult but once away from them it brightens up and improves as you head across the mountain to Soldeu. Well have to wait and see, but either way well be finishing the season on a high with lots of fond memories to keep us going until we can return to the snowy Pyrenees mountains once again. It was a day for low light lenses on the goggles and a buff with some cold winds. I would be wary, though, of icy patches where the snow has been pushed to the side. There was the occasional cold breeze nipping away at your face, lows of -5 degrees celsius and highs of zero meant even with the sunshine you needed an extra layer. The result is that there are still 103 out of 129 pistes open in Grandvalira, and overall the coverage is pretty good. What a brilliant day on the slopes! Even in the afternoon, the pistes in these two sectors were firm and grippy with a lovely layer of soft, sugary snow on top. Its less than a week until Christmas, but today it felt like Christmas had come early - blue skies, sunshine, and a lot of fresh powder! Today is a another beautiful sunny day without a cloud in the sky. Luckily, the views of Grau Roig from the Pic Blanc chairlift are so stunning though that its worth it. There is a total of nearly 70% of pistes open in Grandvalira, thats a massive 145km of linked pistes to enjoy. Despite the recent snowfall, the coverage on the pistes was variable due to the strong winds - some sections the slopes were still covered with a lovely, soft layer of powder, whilst others were windblown and scratchy. The freestyle areas are all open for anyone looking to practice their tricks, and for the real adrenaline junkies dont forget that From March 10 to 13 Grandvalira will once again host two trials of the Speed Skiing World Cup (in the Grau Roig sector). It is possible to ski across all sectors as most of the lift links are running. Since my last snow report on Friday the weather has been showing signs of changing. Today was definitely a day for wearing a neck buff as exposure to the cold air and wind instantly stings your skin. Heading to Pas de la Casa this winter? In any case, it has to be said that the slopes have a good base of snow and are retaining good snow coverage really well across all of Grandvalira. As a result, this run is usually pretty quiet (if not empty) and today was no exception. Despite the dark clouds and lack of sunshine today the air temperature was pretty mild at around 8 degrees, which unfortunately didnt help to improve the snow consistency. This week, it definitely pays to be an earlybird so make sure you get up the slopes nice and early to take advantage of the freshly groomed pistes and grippy corduroy texture. Its definitely in my top three favourite runs, and today at around 9:30am, I had the slope to myself. Its not really been a day for exploring far off-piste though as the visibility has been pretty irregular due to the low clouds, snowfall and flat white light. My favourite run of the day was the boarder-cross track at the top of the TK Coma II T-bar drag lift. As usual, Rossinyol didnt disappoint. About midway through the run, there are spectacular views down into Pas de la Casa, then the pistes verges off onto a wider slope that takes you directly into the town centre. The heavy snow that lasted from this morning through to early afternoon means that the slopes are now topped up with a fresh layer of powder snow making it the perfect time to hit the slopes. Im carrying on trying to tackle black runs and this was a really fun one to ride today, and there was a really nice, soft coverage of fresh snow on the slopesthanks to the work of the snow cannons. Visibility was very good and dark googles or good pair of sunglasses were more than welcome, especially if you are thinking of stopping for a drink, or food and lying on one of the lounges in pessons or just chilling on one of the many terraces over Pas and Grau and the forecast for the rest of the week is to remain the same with a high chance of more snow on Saturday. This week has been, without doubt, the best of the season so far. Pessons is a great place to stop for a coffee mid-ski, and the views here are spectacular. From the top of Pla de les Pedres lift, take the blue Obac Solana run into Soldeu valley and take the Assaladores chairlift. Tomorrow's Racecards The snow is looking promising so far with good coverage on the slopes and a light, crystal-like quality. Yesterday, we experienced a little bit of wind, especially in the higher points (ie Coll Blanc in Pas de la Casa) but nothing major. By far, my favourite run today was the red Serrat Pinos piste, which takes you from the top of the Cubil lift down to the base of Pla de les Pedres lift, linking Grau Roig with Encamp. The temperature is set to drop tomorrow to around -7 degrees and moderate snowfall has been forecasted so if youre headed up the mountain make sure you wrap up warm! Its Friday, and Pas de la Casa definitely has that TGIF (Thank God Its Friday) feeling! What a difference a little bit of snow makes! A flat white light made it difficult to judge the terrain and at times this felt a little disorientating. By late afternoon though the skies began to clear, the wind died down and the sunshine even came out just in time for a beautiful sunset behind the mountains around 4:45pm. With the snow, unfortunately the wind has come as well today which meant that the higher lifts closed so you couldn't cross over in to Grau Roig this afternoon, but there were still runs to enjoy down to resort level. Weve been experiencing some unusually warm temperatures in Grandvalira recently, and as its at the start of the season the snow conditions are currently varied, with some areas a little hard or bumpy. The restuarant itself specialises in traditional mountain cuisine but there is also a small window where you can buy fast food such as pizzas and burgers along with soft drinks and beer. The food in Olimpiades Snack Bar and Restaurant is delicious, and between 4pm and 6pm you can take enjoy their Happy Hour deals and live music. As for Pas de la Casa all the slopes were perfectly groomed, very little skiers or snowboarders around so we could enjoy the full width of the track to do some carving, and a little bit of racing. If youve been following us on Facebook and Instagram youll already know that since Wednesday the snow has been dumping down on us big time! Make sure youre wearing those extra layers so as not to feel the cold when youre not skiing. It is nice and quiet in resort now after the holidays with no lift queues and plenty of room on the slopes. From Pas de la Casa, it takes around 45 minutes to get to Canillo, but the adventure is well worth the journey. The snow is forecast to continue over the weekend, and the temperature will stay well below zero (around -12 degrees) so wrap up warm in plenty of layers if youre heading up the mountain! Its generally better to stick to lower altitude slopes as the temperatures wont be as low, and the winds arent as high. Better yet, theres the Pessons restaurant towards the end of the run which is a perfect place to stop to enjoy a drink or bite to eat surrounded by beautiful mountains and a frozen lake its so easy to relax, but so hard to leave! Many of the lift links between sectors are running and although there are a couple of small grassy patches the snow cannons have been working hard in the evenings and there is some great skiing to be had. Today I headed to Grandvalira-Soldeu where thousands of people had come to watch the Mens Giant Slalom and Womens Slalom races on the black Avet slope. The best run of the day was the blue LAvi run near to Cami de Pessons. TV Guide On Monday and Saturday mornings from around 9:15am and afternoons from 1:30pm the queue for the gondola up to Ski School can stretch quite a way though, particularly in Half-Term week or public holidays. The air up here is thin, so visitors should take plenty of time to explore. Currently the forecast is predicting light snowfall from this evening. As the New Year has only just passed, its still quite busy in resort, though not so much so that the pistes arent enjoyable. This run goes parallel to the black run Mirador that this week was better than ever, perfectly pisted and with spring snow that has delighted all the skiers in the area. The most enjoyable run of the day was Solanelles - a nice cruisy blue which takes you from Funicamp to the bottom of the Pla de les Pedres Grau Roig chairlift. There was noticeably more people on the slopes due to the Christmas holidays, and it was great to see lots of families enjoying quality time together on the mountain. In the town centre, theres piles of snow the same height as shop windows, and theres even makeshift kickers on side streets where keen snowboarders and skiers have continued the fun after the slopes have closed. There are some small sections of the runs that can be a little hard compact but on the whole the majority of the runs still make for a greatride!

There are high winds at the top of some chair lifts, so be sure to wrap up warm and make sure you're prepared for the cold. I like riding this mini-piste as its often empty as the majority of people stick to the main Directa piste. In general the snow conditions were good, just the odd patch of ice with the snow softening up later in the day and in the sunnier spots. If youre in Grandvalira, then this is an exciting event not to be missed. If the forecast is accurate, therell be more snowfall tomorrow and at the weekend, so we can expect to see the coverage on the pistes improve across Grandvalira. Its only thirteen days until the season comes to an end in Grandvalira, however the coverage on the slopes is fantastic, and the snow depth has improved just enough over the last week that weve been able to ride some of our favourite off-piste areas again. Stay close to the piste markers as these will guide you in the right direction down the slopes and stick with your ski/snowboarding buddies so that no one gets lost or left behind. The snow started on Wednesday night and has barely let off. In some places the piste was a little wind blown, however overall the coverage on the mountain is looking good. Its been a genuine honour to be a part of the community of skiers and snowboarders who have turned out to watch these events, especially the prestigious FIS World Cup Finals which will be remembered in the history of Grandvalira for many years to come. As a result, the light was a little flat at times, but it wasnt too long before the sun and pockets of blue sky reappeared. Overall, the coverage is currently pretty good; although some sections of the slopes do still feel hard, with compact snow underneath the sugary cannon snow.
